Earth above, Heaven below — the one arrangement in which the two great forces move toward each other instead of apart. What Tai (泰), the eleventh hexagram of the I Ching, says about harmony, timing, prosperity, and the discipline of building while the season is good.
Hexagram 11 is Peace (泰, Tài), the eleventh of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Its structure is Earth above, Heaven below — the yielding ground placed over the rising sky. This is the only one of the sixty-four in which the two primal forces move toward one another: Heaven's light rises, Earth's weight descends, and instead of separating they interpenetrate. That meeting is the whole meaning of the hexagram, and it is why Tai is read as peace, ease and flourishing rather than as mere good luck.
Structurally, Peace pairs the Kun trigram (Earth, pure receptivity) above with Qian (Heaven, pure creative strength) below. Compare this with Hexagram 12, Standstill, where the same two trigrams sit the other way round — Heaven on top, Earth beneath — and because each then moves away from the other, communication stops and the situation decays. The geometry is the argument: yang naturally rises and yin naturally sinks, so only when Heaven is placed below and Earth above do the two currents flow into one another. In the Five Elements this is Earth and Metal in a generating relation — Earth produces Metal — so the structure is not merely non-hostile but actively productive. Nothing is being fought in this hexagram. What the reading has to work out is therefore not how to overcome something, but how to behave inside a good season without wasting it or breaking it.
The judgment of Tai is short, and every word of it counts: "Peace. The small departs; the great arrives. Good fortune. Success." It is one of the few hexagrams whose judgment opens with the plain word peace — and the text immediately explains where that peace comes from.
The phrase 小往大來 — "the small goes, the great comes" — is a statement about traffic, not about size. In the hexagram's inner structure the small (the yin lines) are moving outward and downward while the great (the yang lines) are rising into the place of influence; the exchange is what creates the opening. Read practically, it describes a period in which petty constraints loosen and substantial things become possible: the small obstacle withdraws, the real opportunity arrives. Note the tense. Tai does not describe a condition you have achieved; it describes a moment that has arrived. The judgment's job is to tell you what kind of moment you are in, so that you do not spend it as though it were an ordinary one.「小往大來」這一句,談的是往來,不是大小。
There is also a discipline hidden inside so short a sentence. Because the great has come, the temptation is to treat the season as permanent and to take it personally — as though one's own merit had produced the weather. The hexagram never says that. It says the small departed: something left, and its leaving is part of the good news. A person reading Tai well asks what has been let go of, and takes care not to drag it back.
The Image commentary reads: "Heaven and earth in communication: the image of Peace. Thus the ruler divides and completes the course of heaven and earth, and furthers and regulates the gifts of heaven and earth, and so aids the people."《象傳》寫道:「天地交,泰。
The first two words do all the work: 天地交 — heaven and earth in communication. Peace in this tradition is not the absence of conflict; it is the presence of circulation. A household where nothing is said is not at peace, it is merely quiet — the classical texts are careful about the difference. The same test applies to a body, an organisation, or a market: the health of the thing is measured by whether its parts are still talking to each other.
The second half of the Image is where Chinese political thought puts its weight. The 后 — the ruler — is described as one who completes and regulates heaven and earth's course rather than one who commands it. The verbs are agricultural: assist the seasons, complete what is already growing, and do not invent the harvest. That is a strikingly modest picture of authority, and it is the practical form of Tai — when conditions are good, the leader's task is not to add drama but to keep the channels open and let the growth happen.
Tai's six lines describe a single arc: the opening of the good season, its deepening, and the first quiet signs of its end. The first three lines are the ascent — the yang underneath coming up into the world. The last three are the descent — the yin above settling down into usefulness — until the sixth line shows the structure beginning to fail:泰卦的六爻描繪的是同一條弧線:好季節的開啟、它的深厚,以及它結束時最初那些安靜的徵兆。
|---|---|---|
| 1 (bottom)1(最下) | Pulling up couch grass: the roots come away in a clump. Going forth: good fortune. | The first move of a good season, and it is a move made with others. Couch grass shares one root system, so pulling a single stalk brings the whole clump with it — the point of the line is that at the beginning of Tai nothing rises alone and nothing is done alone. Move, yes; but move with the people you are already connected to. One person's private ascent is not what the hexagram means by arriving. |
| 22 | Bearing with the uncultivated; using the means to cross the river; not neglecting what is distant; not using friends for private ends: one may then follow the middle way. | The second line of Tai is the most demanding line in the hexagram, and it is a portrait of a fair mind under good conditions. Four obligations: tolerate what is unrefined, attempt the difficult crossing, remember the people far away who are easy to forget, and do not let personal loyalty bend the decision. Prosperity is exactly when favouritism becomes tempting, and the line's verdict is that the middle way is the only way to hold the position. |
| 33 | There is no plain that does not become a slope; no going that does not return. Persevering in difficulty: no blame. Do not grieve over the loss of sincerity — you will find blessing in your food. | The turn. Here the hexagram states the law of its own subject: no level ground stays level and no advance runs forever. The counsel is not to prevent the change — it cannot be prevented — but to keep one's integrity through it, and not to panic when some small reciprocity is lost. The closing image is domestic and deliberate: do not mourn the missing gratitude; there is still blessing on the table. |
| 44 | Fluttering and descending — not making itself rich, but bringing its neighbours; without warning, and in sincerity. | The upper yin lines come down to meet the yang below, and they come down unarmed. The line names an unusual thing: influence exerted without money and without a show of force, arriving simply because trust already exists. In a structure of peace, the strongest move available to someone with resources is to spend them on connection rather than on display — and to do it without needing to be thanked. |
| 55 | Emperor Yi gives his daughter in marriage. This brings blessing: supreme good fortune. | The most fortunate line in the hexagram, and it is a line about a union between two parties of unequal rank. The emperor marries his daughter downward, deliberately lowering the throne to meet the other house. Meaning: at the height of Peace, the dignified thing is to reach down rather than to be reached for, and the good fortune follows from the descent itself, not from the display. Every reading of Tai eventually arrives at this line, because it is the one line that says what peace is for. |
| 6 (top)6(上爻) | The wall falls back into the moat. Do not use the army. Announce the command from your own city. Persistence brings regret. | Peace ends, and it ends structurally: the wall was built from earth dug out of the moat, and when the structure fails, the earth goes back where it came from. The line's counsel is entirely about how to respond to a season that is over — do not use force to hold what is already leaving, do not march out to restore the old order, shrink the range of your command to what you actually still control; and even then, clinging to it brings regret. Its severity is the other half of line 5's generosity: the same hexagram that teaches you how to receive a good season also tells you the exact shape of its end. |
Read the table from bottom to top and one idea runs through it: Tai is a season that arrives on its own and is kept only by conduct. Line 1 shows the ascent beginning with other people. Line 2 loads the whole position with obligation — tolerate, attempt, remember, stay impartial. Line 3 announces the turn while there is still time to keep one's integrity. Line 4 shows influence that works without money because trust was already there. Line 5 gives the whole point away: at the top of Peace, the dignified move is to lower yourself toward whoever is beneath you. And line 6 is what happens when no one in the structure does any of that. Notice that only the first line is about opportunity and only the last is about failure; the four in between are all about behaviour. The judgment is generous — the small departs, the great arrives, good fortune, success — but the six lines make it clear that arriving is not the same as lasting. Peace is not something you own. It is something you are, for a while, inside of.
In a love reading, Tai is the hexagram of a relationship that is working — and its counsel is aimed at the particular dangers of things going well. It tends to appear at the beginning of something with real promise, or during a period of unusual ease: the two people are in communication, nothing is being concealed, and the ordinary friction has quieted down. The hexagram does not treat this as a plateau to be enjoyed. Its first line says the good thing begins with people moving together, and its second line immediately imposes obligations on whoever holds the stronger position.
The lines are practical in an unusually warm way. Line 1: let the relationship rise inside its own natural circle of friends, family and shared acquaintance — nothing genuine begins as a private transaction. Line 2 is the whole of Tai applied to a couple: bear with what is unrefined in the other person, be willing to attempt the hard crossing together, do not forget the people at the edges of the relationship, and never let loyalty to one person become unfairness to another. Line 3 is the honest one: no plain stays plain. A couple who assume their ease will last without maintenance are already on the slope, and the line's advice is to keep their integrity rather than to keep score. Line 4 describes the most attractive thing in a partnership — influence that works without leverage, arriving because trust was already banked. Line 5 is the summit: the partner holding more power is the one who should come down to meet the other, and the good fortune belongs to that descent. And line 6 is the ending the hexagram does not pretend away: when the wall falls back into the moat, the answer is not to fight for the old arrangement but to reduce your claims to what is actually still there — and to know that holding on past that point only adds regret.
Work is where Tai is most easily mistaken for permission. A good season in a career feels like an endorsement of whatever one is already doing, and the hexagram's six lines exist to correct that reading. Tai is the hexagram of expansion, connection and opening — and its lines attach an obligation to nearly all of it:職場正是泰卦最容易被誤讀為「許可」的地方。
There is a harder reading here as well, and the hexagram does not hide it. Tai says nothing about the season being earned, and nothing about it staying. In this reading, organisations at their peak are precisely the ones whose structures have begun returning to their source — the wall that looks strongest is often the one whose earth is already going back into the moat. The practical counsel of Hexagram 11 is therefore double: while the season is open, keep the channels clear, remember the distant people, and do not hoard; and while it is still open, quietly work out what you would actually be able to hold if it closed. That is what makes line 5 — the reach downward — the most valuable move in the whole hexagram and not merely the most gracious.
The I Ching and Bazi share one root: the interplay of yin and yang and the Five Elements. Hexagram 11 places Earth (Kun) above Heaven (Qian) — the receptive above the creative, which in elemental terms is Earth receiving Metal: 土生金, Earth produces Metal. This is one of the few hexagrams whose two trigrams stand in a generating relation rather than a controlling one, and it is why Tai is read as support that arrives rather than friction that must be overcome.《易經》與八字同出一源:皆源於陰陽互動與五行生剋。
If your Day Master is Metal, this hexagram describes a period in which your own element is being produced by the environment around it — resources, goodwill and opportunity all moving toward you at once. The temptation in that condition is line 4 read backwards: to behave as though the goodwill were a personal achievement and to spend it on display. A strong-Metal chart is more likely to be tested by line 5 — whether it reaches down, or merely enjoys being high. If your Day Master is Earth, the relation reverses: you are the one giving, and you are supporting a yang current that is currently rising. The hexagram's advice to an Earth chart is line 2 — be generous, but stay exact about fairness, because in a period when you are the source, no one else will correct your favouritism for you. And if your chart is dominated by another element entirely, your Bazi chart will still show what shape your Tai takes — an opening at work, a reconciliation, a year of health, a market that turns — and therefore which of the six lines' obligations you are most likely to be asked to carry.
It means Peace (Tai 泰): Earth above Heaven — the only arrangement of the two primal trigrams in which the forces move toward each other rather than apart, because yang naturally rises from the Heaven trigram below while yin naturally descends from the Earth trigram above. The judgment reads "Peace. The small departs; the great arrives. Good fortune. Success." The reading is about a season of opening, communication and prosperity, and about the discipline of keeping it: the lines counsel tolerance, fairness, awareness of the coming turn, influence without leverage, reaching down from a position of strength, and finally knowing how to let a finished season go.
It is the heart of the hexagram's judgment, and it describes traffic rather than size. In the structure of Hexagram 11 the small — the yin lines — are moving outward and downward while the great — the yang lines — are rising into the place of influence. Practically, it names a period in which minor constraints loosen and substantial things finally become possible: the small obstacle withdraws so that the real opportunity can move in. The tense matters. Tai does not describe something you have achieved; it describes a moment that has arrived. Part of reading it well is noticing what has been let go of, and taking care not to drag it back.
It is the hexagram of a relationship that is working, and its counsel addresses the special dangers of things going well rather than badly. It usually appears at the start of something with real promise, or during a stretch of unusual ease. Line 1 says the good thing begins with people moving together, not privately. Line 2 imposes obligations on the stronger partner: tolerate, attempt the hard crossing together, remember the people at the edges, stay fair. Line 3 warns that no plain stays plain — ease needs maintenance, and integrity matters more than score-keeping. Line 4 describes influence that works without leverage because trust was already banked. Line 5 says the partner with more power should be the one to come down, and the good fortune belongs to that descent. Line 6 is the honest ending: when the structure fails, reduce your claims to what is actually still there rather than fighting for the old arrangement.
They are consecutive and are exact inversions of each other — the clearest pair in the whole I Ching. Hexagram 11 places Earth above Heaven; Hexagram 12 (Pi, Standstill) places Heaven above Earth. Because yang rises and yin sinks, the arrangement in Tai makes the two forces move into one another and communicate, while the arrangement in Pi makes them move apart and stop communicating. The trigrams are identical; only their order differs. In practice Tai is read as opening, circulation and prosperity, and Pi as blocking, stagnation and withdrawal — and the classical texts are explicit that the two shade into each other, which is why the third line of Hexagram 11 already announces the turn and its sixth line shows the structure failing.
