I Ching Hexagram 10: Treading

Heaven above the lake — and a path that walks on the tiger's tail without being bitten. What Lü (履), the tenth hexagram of the I Ching, says about conduct, boundaries, footing, and how to move correctly under a power you cannot change.

What Is Hexagram 10?

Hexagram 10 is Treading (履, Lü), the tenth of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Its structure is Heaven above, Lake below — the strong, creative sky moving over the gentle, joyful water. Five of its six lines are yang, and the single yin line sits in the third place: the soft is underneath, the firm is above. That is the whole situation of the hexagram — a weaker thing walking beneath a much stronger one — and its subject is therefore not power but conduct: how a person treads.

Structurally, Treading pairs the Qian trigram (Heaven, pure creative strength) above with Dui (the Lake, joy and gentle persuasion) below. In the Five Elements, Qian is yang Metal and Dui is yin Metal — the same element in two temperatures, one above the other. Heaven does not change its course to suit the lake, and the lake cannot push the sky aside; all the lake can do is receive it correctly. That is why the hexagram is not about altering your circumstances but about comporting yourself within them, which is exactly what the word 履 means: to place the foot on the ground, one step at a time.

The Judgment: Treading on the Tiger's Tail

The judgment of Lü reads: "Treading upon the tail of the tiger. It does not bite the man. Success." Six characters of Chinese, and one of the most precise descriptions of risk in the whole I Ching.

Note what the image does not say. It does not say the danger was avoided — you are already standing on the tiger's tail. It does not say the tiger was defeated, tamed, or persuaded. It says only that the tiger did not bite, and that this is success. The teaching is exact: in most dangerous situations the outcome is decided not by the powerful party but by the conduct of the one who is weaker. The tiger's temperament is not yours to control. Your footing, your timing, the tone in which you speak, whether you announce yourself or slip past — those are yours.

The hexagram adds one more thing in its Image, and it is the practical heart of Treading: the superior man discriminates between high and low. Not as a hierarchy to obey, but as a sense of proportion — knowing who is above you, who is below, and precisely where you stand. Confusion about position is what makes people step too hard or too softly. Clarity about it is what makes the step land correctly.

The Image: Distinguishing High and Low

The Image commentary reads: "Heaven above, the lake below: the image of Treading. Thus the superior man discriminates between high and low, and gives settlement to the aims of the people." The second half of that sentence is the part modern readers skip, and it is the most useful.《象傳》寫道:「上天下澤,履。

The Chinese phrase 定民志 — "settles the aims of the people" — describes what happens when everyone knows their place and their part. Anxiety is usually not caused by difficulty; it is caused by ambiguity about where one stands. A team that knows who decides moves calmly. A person who knows their own limits stops comparing. When the boundaries are clear, effort can be spent on the work instead of on the worry. Treading, in this reading, is not submission — it is the relief of knowing exactly what the next step is and being able to take it well.「定民志」這三個字,描述的是一種狀態:當每個人都清楚自己的位置與本分時,心志自然安定。

The Six Lines of Hexagram 10: Conduct From First to Last履卦六爻:由始至終的舉止

Lü's six lines trace a complete walk — from the plainness of the first step, through the overreach that gets you bitten, to the cautious passage and the final review of a journey made well:履卦六爻描繪了一趟完整的行走——從第一步的素樸,經過會讓你被咬的過度自信,到謹慎的通過,再到對一趟走得好的旅程的最終回顧:

1 (bottom)1(最下)Simple conduct. To go forward: no blame. The first step, taken plainly and without ornament. No strategy, no display, no calculation of advantage — just walk as you are. In a hexagram about conduct, the purest move is also the safest: simplicity cannot be tripped up by its own cleverness.
22Treading a smooth, level path. A quiet person, steadfast: good fortune. The road is genuinely easy here — no tiger, no friction, no one watching. The line's counsel is aimed at temperament rather than circumstances: the person who prefers quiet and does not need an audience is the one who keeps good fortune. Attention-seeking is what turns a level path into a hazard.
33A one-eyed man can see; a lame man can walk. But treading on the tiger's tail, the tiger bites him: misfortune. A warrior acting for a great prince. The named danger, and the only yin line — the vulnerable place. It is a portrait of overestimating yourself: half-sight that insists it sees, a limp that insists it walks, and then the fatal step. The closing phrase adds the motive — ambition on behalf of a powerful patron, the classic reason a limited person attempts a move beyond their footing. This is the line to recognise in yourself before you act.
44Treading on the tiger's tail. Fearful and cautious — in the end, good fortune. The remedy, stated plainly. You are in the dangerous position and you know it — and that knowledge is precisely what saves you. The line does not ask for courage; it asks for care held with sincerity. Fear that keeps you alert is a virtue here. Most disasters in delicate situations come from forgetting, for one moment, that the tiger is there.
55Resolute treading. Steadfast — but aware of danger. The strongest position in the hexagram, and the most tempting to misuse. Decisive, confident conduct is not forbidden — but the text attaches the word danger to it. Even a correct course, walked without self-awareness, walks on the tiger's tail. Power is legitimate here; certainty is not.
6 (top)6(上爻)Look at how it was trodden; examine the omens. When the circle is complete: supreme good fortune. The journey is over and the hexagram asks for a review rather than a celebration. Look back at the way you actually walked — not the way you meant to walk — and check it against the results. When conduct and outcome agree, the round is complete, and the good fortune is of the durable kind. This is the line that turns Treading from a single cautious moment into a practice.
THE PATTERN

Conduct Is the Whole of It舉止本身,就是全部

Read the table from bottom to top and a single idea runs through it: Lü is a hexagram in which nothing is decided by power, and everything is decided by conduct. Line 1 is the plain step — walk as you are and you cannot be tripped up. Line 2 is the easy road, where the danger is no longer the tiger but your own appetite for attention. Line 3 is the disaster that ambition without footing produces. Line 4 is the recovery, and it works because it is honest about fear. Line 5 is strength that remains legitimate only while it stays aware of itself. And line 6 is the review, which converts one careful walk into a way of walking for life. Notice what never appears in this hexagram: the taming of the tiger. Nothing in Treading asks you to change the powerful thing in front of you. It asks only that you keep your footing, know where you stand, and finish the circle.

Hexagram 10 in Love & Relationships

In a love reading, Treading is the hexagram of conduct inside a relationship — the small courtesies, the tone of a voice, the way a difficult sentence is delivered. It tends to appear when the two people are not equals in power: one earns more, one is further along, one holds the emotional upper hand, or one simply has more to lose. It also appears whenever a delicate subject has to be raised without setting off a fight.

The lines are unusually practical here. Line 1: say the plain thing plainly, without managing it — unadorned honesty rarely damages a relationship. Line 2: when things are calm and easy, resist the urge to test the peace; the quiet partner is the one who keeps it. Line 3 is the warning every reader should sit with: the one-eyed man who insists he can see, walking straight onto the tiger's tail — forcing an issue you are not yet in a position to win, often in pursuit of someone else's approval. Line 4 is the remedy and the comfort: in a delicate moment, care and a visible awareness of the risk make the passage safe — the conversation you are afraid to have, held with respect, usually ends better than the silence would have. Line 5 warns the partner with the stronger position: being right does not license being relentless. And line 6 closes the loop — when a relationship has been walked carefully all the way round, the good fortune is the lasting kind, because it rests on a habit and not on luck.

Hexagram 10 in Career & Major Decisions

Work is where Treading is most obviously at home, because work is where most people spend their days on someone else's tiger's tail: reporting to a temperament, working under a rule they did not write, negotiating from the weaker side, raising a problem that no one above them wants to hear. The hexagram's verdict on all of it is consistent — the risk is real, and it is survivable, if the conduct is right:職場正是履卦最顯身手之處,因為大多數人一天中的大部分時間,都是踩在別人的虎尾上:向一種脾氣匯報、在一條自己沒寫過的規則下工作、從較弱的一方談判、提出一個上面沒有人想聽的問題。

  • Delivering bad news upward? Lines 1 and 4 — say it plainly and show that you understand the risk too. What gets people bitten is not the news but the manner: casualness reads as contempt, and over-formality reads as fear.
  • Negotiating from the weaker side? Line 3 is the trap — do not bluff a position you cannot hold, especially not to impress a sponsor. Line 4 is the technique: name the constraint you are under, once, without apology. Weak parties usually gain more from acknowledged limits than from manufactured leverage.
  • You have the authority? Line 5 — your correctness is not a licence to be relentless. The strongest position in the hexagram still carries the word danger, and it usually arrives as the certainty that you no longer need to listen.
  • Working under a rule you cannot change? The Image's counsel is the whole answer — establish precisely where the boundaries are, and stop spending energy on resenting them. Clear limits are what let you move quickly inside them.
  • Finished a delicate project? Line 6 — do the review. Compare the way you actually conducted yourself with the result you actually got. No other line in the I Ching turns good conduct into a repeatable method so directly.

There is a harder reading available here too, and the hexagram does not hide it. Treading says nothing about the tiger becoming kinder. If a superior's temperament is genuinely destructive, correct conduct will keep you un-bitten but it will not make the situation good — and line 3's warning applies in reverse to the person who stays too long out of loyalty to a patron. Walking well includes knowing when to walk away.

Hexagram 10 and Your Birth Chart

The I Ching and Bazi share one root: the interplay of yin and yang and the Five Elements. Hexagram 10 places Heaven (Qian, yang Metal) above the Lake (Dui, yin Metal). Unlike most hexagrams, this one is not a clash of elements at all — it is a single element in two conditions, the firm above and the pliant below, and the relationship between them is entirely one of bearing and comportment.《易經》與八字同出一源:皆源於陰陽互動與五行生剋。

If your Day Master is Metal, this hexagram describes your own element's two faces, and the reading turns on which face you are living from. Yang Metal is decisive, boundary-setting, cutting; yin Metal is refined, receptive, responsive, and easily overridden. A strong-yang-Metal chart walking into a situation where it cannot lead needs line 4's discipline — fear honestly acknowledged — rather than line 5's certainty. A yin-Metal chart in the same situation is naturally at home in the hexagram, but risks line 3: agreeing too readily with a stronger patron, then overreaching to prove itself. If your chart is dominated by another element entirely, your Bazi chart still shows what shape your "tiger" tends to take — an authority, a deadline, a temperament — and therefore which line of Treading you are most likely to be tested on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Hexagram 10 mean in the I Ching?

It means Treading (Lü 履): Heaven above the Lake, five yang lines with one yin line beneath them. The judgment says "Treading upon the tail of the tiger. It does not bite the man. Success." The reading is about conduct rather than power — how you walk in the presence of something stronger than yourself. It counsels plainness, a clear sense of where you stand, and care held with sincerity, and it warns against overestimating your footing and against pressing a correct position too hard.

What does "treading on the tiger's tail" mean?「

It is the hexagram's central image of acting in the presence of something far more powerful than yourself. You have not avoided the tiger — you are already on its tail — and the outcome can still be good, because what decides it is your conduct rather than the tiger's temperament. The counsel is to tread softly, keep your footing, and stay aware of the danger without being paralysed by it. In practice this covers most real situations: speaking up to a senior, raising an unwelcome problem, negotiating from the weaker side, or setting a boundary with someone whose reaction you cannot control.

What does Hexagram 10 mean for love?

It is the hexagram of conduct within a relationship: the tone, the timing, the way a difficult thing is said. It often appears when the two people are unequal in power, or when a delicate subject has to be raised without starting a fight. Line 3 warns against forcing an issue you are not in a position to win; line 4 is the remedy — care and an honest awareness of the risk make a delicate conversation safer than silence; line 5 warns the stronger partner that being right is not a licence to be relentless; and line 6 promises that a relationship walked carefully all the way round ends in lasting good fortune.

How is Hexagram 10 different from Hexagram 9?

They are consecutive and mirror each other. Hexagram 9 (Taming Power of the Small) puts Wind above Heaven — the gentle element on top restraining strength below, so the theme is held-back force and the discipline of waiting. Hexagram 10 (Treading) puts Heaven above the Lake — strength on top, walking above something placid, so the theme is conduct, footing and boundaries under an authority you cannot change. Hexagram 9 asks you to gather and wait well; Hexagram 10 asks you to walk carefully while you wait.
