The Building Blocks of Chinese Time中國時間體系的基石

For over 3,000 years, the Chinese calendar has tracked time using two parallel systems: the Heavenly Stems (天干, Tian Gan) and the Earthly Branches (地支, Di Zhi). Together, these 22 symbols form the backbone of Chinese astrology, Bazi, the Chinese zodiac, and traditional timekeeping.

Think of them as two gears: 10 teeth on one (Stems) and 12 teeth on the other (Branches). When they mesh together, they create a 60-position cycle known as the Sexagenary Cycle Each year, month, day, and hour is assigned one Stem-Branch pair, and the cycle repeats every 60 iterations.

In Bazi, your birth year, month, day, and hour each produce one Stem-Branch combination — giving you Four Pillars, or Eight Characters total. This is why Bazi is called "Eight Characters."

The Ten Heavenly Stems (Tian Gan)十天干(Tian Gan)

The Heavenly Stems represent the Yang side of the calendar — the celestial, active, and Heavenly energy. Each stem carries one of the Five Elements in either its Yang or Yin form:天干代表曆法中的 面——即天道的、主動的與上天的能量。

Jia Yang Wood Jia 陽木

The towering tree. Jia represents upward growth, leadership, and principled action. In Bazi, a Jia Day Master is someone who stands tall, protects others, and has a strong sense of direction — sometimes to the point of stubbornness.

They are often drawn to precision, teaching, and quiet acts of kindness.

The Twelve Earthly Branches (Di Zhi)十二地支(Di Zhi)

The Earthly Branches represent the Yin side — the terrestrial, receptive, and earthly energy. Each Branch corresponds to a Chinese zodiac animal, a season, a time of day, and a fixed element:地支代表的一面——屬於大地、具包容性且承載萬物的能量。

The twelve Earthly Branches also map to the twelve Chinese double-hours. Each Branch governs a two-hour window, and the hour of your birth determines your Hour Pillar in Bazi — which reveals information about your children, creative output, and later life.

The Sexagenary Cycle (60 Jiazi)六十甲子週期(60 Jiazi)

When the 10 Stems and 12 Branches are paired together — one Stem with one Branch, advancing simultaneously — they create 60 unique combinations before the cycle repeats. This is the Sexagenary Cycle (六十甲子), also called the "60 Jiazi" after its first combination, Jia-Zi (甲子).

Why 60 and not 120 (10 × 12)? Because Stems and Branches advance in lockstep, and since 10 and 12 share a common factor of 2, only half the combinations are possible. Specifically, Yang Stems only pair with Yang Branches, and Yin Stems only pair with Yin Branches.

  • Jia (Yang) pairs with Zi (Yang) → Jia-Zi ✓
  • Jia (Yang) with Chou (Yin) → never happens ✗
  • Yi (Yin) with Chou (Yin) → Yi-Chou ✓
  • Yi (Yin) with Zi (Yang) → never happens ✗

The 60 combinations cycle through years, months, days, and hours simultaneously. For example, 2026 is the year Bing-Wu (丙午) — Yang Fire on Yang Fire, the Year of the Horse.

Nayin: The Musical Elements

Beyond the basic Five Elements, each of the 60 Jiazi combinations has a Nayin (納音) element — a "musical" or "tonal" element with a poetic name. The Nayin system adds another layer of meaning to each Stem-Branch pair:除了基礎五行之外,六十甲子組合中的每一組都有一個納音五行——一種帶有詩意名稱的「音律」或「聲律」五行。

  • Gold in the Sea (Jia-Zi, Yi-Chou) — hidden value, deep reserves
  • Fire in the Furnace (Bing-Yin, Ding-Mao) — forged through pressure
  • Wood of the Great Forest (Wu-Chen, Ji-Si) — collective strength
  • Thunder Fire (Wu-Wu, Ji-Wei) — sudden illumination
  • Gold in the Sand (Geng-Wu, Xin-Wei) — raw talent needing refinement
  • Water of the Big River (Ren-Shen, Gui-You) — powerful, public flow
  • Wood of the Willow (Ren-Zi, Gui-Chou) — graceful, adaptable beauty
  • Metal of the Sword (Ren-Yin, Gui-Mao) — decisive, purposeful action

Your Nayin element is based on your birth year's Jiazi pair. It describes the quality of your element rather than its type — like saying not just "Fire" but "Fire in a Furnace" or "Thunder Fire."

How Stems and Branches Work in Bazi

In your Bazi chart, each of the Four Pillars contains one Stem and one Branch:

Day日柱Day Master日主Zodiac animal生肖Core self, spouse本我、配偶

The Day Stem (Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar) is the most important symbol in your chart. It is your Day Master — the element that represents "you." Everything else in your chart is interpreted in relation to this one symbol.

Stems, Branches, and the Five Elements

Both Stems and Branches carry Five Elements energy, but they interact differently:

  • Stem-Stem interactions — Heavenly Stems can combine (合), clash (沖), or generate each other天干與天干的互動——天干可以相合、相沖或彼此相生
  • Stem-Branch interactions — The Stem sits on the Branch like Heaven sits on Earth; their elemental relationship reveals whether the pillar is "supported" or "drained"天干與地支的互動——天干坐於地支之上,猶如天立於地;兩者的五行關係揭示了該柱是獲得「生扶」還是被「洩耗」

For example, if your Day Stem is Jia (Wood) and your Day Branch is Hai (Water), the Water nourishes the Wood — this is a well-supported Day Master. But if Jia sits on Shen (Metal), the Metal attacks the Wood — this creates tension in the pillar.

A System Older Than Astrology

The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches predate Bazi by centuries. They were originally used for date-keeping in the Shang Dynasty (around 1200 BCE), inscribed on oracle bones. Over time, philosophers and astrologers layered elemental, seasonal, and personality meanings onto this calendar system, turning a dating tool into a framework for understanding cosmic patterns.

Today, the same 22 symbols still track time in the Chinese calendar, still form the foundation of Bazi readings, and still offer the same insight they offered 3,000 years ago: that time itself has quality, and the moment you were born carries a specific energetic signature.
