Heaven and water move in opposite directions. What Song (訟), the sixth hexagram of the I Ching, says about disputes, knowing when to stop, and winning by refusing to fight.
Hexagram 6 is Conflict (訟, Song), the sixth of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Its structure is Heaven above, Water below — two forces moving in opposite directions, the rising sky and the downward-flowing river passing each other without meeting. The hexagram appears when a disagreement has hardened into a standoff: both sides feel sincerely in the right, both feel obstructed, and neither can see the other's direction anymore. Its judgment is deliberately double-edged: a cautious halt brings good fortune; carrying the conflict to the end brings misfortune.
Structurally, Conflict pairs Qian (Heaven, unyielding strength) on top with the Kan trigram (Water, danger) below. Strength sits above danger — a capable, confident person facing a situation laced with risk, and being tempted to use that strength to force an outcome. The Image sees the geometry plainly: heaven moves upward, water flows downward, and the two never converge. In the Five Elements, Qian is Metal and Kan is Water — an interesting detail, because Metal actually generates Water. Conflict in this hexagram is rarely between true enemies; it is usually between parties who belong together but are moving in opposite directions.
The judgment of Song reads: "Conflict. You are sincere but obstructed. A cautious halt midway brings good fortune. To carry it through to the end brings misfortune. It is favorable to see the great man. It is not favorable to cross the great water." Every clause earns its place.
You are sincere but obstructed — the I Ching concedes you may genuinely be right. That concession is the trap: being right is exactly what makes people fight to the finish. A cautious halt midway brings good fortune; the end brings misfortune (中吉,終凶) is the hexagram's famous arithmetic — disputes compound like interest, and the later stages always cost more than the original grievance was worth. It is favorable to see the great man: the way out is a wise, neutral arbiter — a mediator, a judge, an elder — not a louder argument. And not favorable to cross the great water is a plain instruction: this is not the season to launch anything major while the dispute is still burning.
The Image commentary draws an unusually practical lesson: "Heaven and water go their opposite ways: the image of Conflict. Thus the superior man, in all his transactions, carefully considers the beginning." The Chinese phrase 作事謀始 — "in undertaking affairs, plan the start" — is the hexagram's quiet gift.《象傳》提出了一個極具實用價值的教誨:「天與水違行,訟。
The logic: almost no conflict begins at the moment it erupts. It begins weeks earlier, in an unclear agreement, an unspoken expectation, a promise made loosely. The superior man responds not by becoming a better fighter but by becoming a clearer beginner — putting terms in writing, defining who does what, naming the expectations out loud before the work starts. Read this way, Hexagram 6 is less about lawsuits than about drafting: the best way to win a dispute is to arrange circumstances in which it never has a reason to exist.
Song's six lines are a small anthology of exits from a dispute — dropping it, fleeing it, outgrowing it, settling it, and one cautionary tale of winning:
|---|---|---|
| 1 (bottom)1(最下) | Do not perpetuate the conflict. There is a little gossip; in the end, good fortune. | The dispute is still small. Drop it now, accept a few sharp words, and it dissolves. The cheapest exit on the list. |
| 22 | He cannot engage in conflict; he returns home and withdraws. His three hundred households remain without blame. | Outmatched or outnumbered, he walks away — and his withdrawal protects everyone who depends on him. Retreat as responsibility. |
| 33 | He nourishes himself on old virtue. Perseverance in danger; in the end, good fortune. If he serves, he does not claim the achievement. | Restraint through character. Hold to proven values, keep serving without demanding credit, and the danger passes. |
| 44 | He cannot engage in conflict. He turns back, submits to fate, changes his attitude, and finds peace in perseverance. Good fortune. | An inner reversal rather than an outer one. He was not forced to quit — he chose to change his mind, and found peace in it. |
| 55 | Conflict before the great man. Supreme good fortune. | The one fight worth having: brought before a genuinely wise and impartial authority. Justice, not victory, resolves it. |
| 6 (top)6(上爻) | A belt of honor is granted him — and snatched away three times before the morning ends. | The hollow victory. He wins the suit, wears the prize, and loses it again and again. Even won conflicts earn no lasting respect. |
Read the table from bottom to top and a pattern emerges: the lines that end in good fortune are almost all forms of stopping — dropping the matter, withdrawing, changing one's attitude, or submitting to fair judgment. The only line that fights and wins is the top one, and its prize is snatched away three times before breakfast. The I Ching's verdict on conflict is nearly mathematical: the cost of a dispute rises with every stage, so the best time to end it is always earlier than feels satisfying. Line 1 is the master line — most fights are cheapest to quit when they are still small enough to quit gracefully.
In a love reading, Conflict rarely means the relationship is broken — it means the two partners, like Heaven and Water, are pulling toward different directions: different ideas about money, family, moving, or what the next year should look like. The question the hexagram poses is not "who is right?" but "what will continuing this argument cost?"
The lines translate directly. Line 1: let the small stuff go while it is still small — the sarcastic remark, the forgotten errand — and accept a little friction in exchange for peace. Line 2: when an argument with a partner's family or a friend circles endlessly, withdrawing is not surrender; it protects the household. Line 4 is the deepest move in love: genuinely changing your own attitude instead of waiting for your partner to change theirs. And when a dispute keeps returning no matter what, line 5 applies — take it to the "great man": a couples counselor or a neutral elder both of you trust, not the friend who will automatically take your side. The top line is the caution: you can win every argument and still lose the warmth. Being right is not a relationship strategy.
Work questions put Song in its most literal element — disputes with colleagues, contract disagreements, contested credit, sometimes an actual lawsuit.
The judgment's "not favorable to cross the great water" matters here too: while a dispute is live, do not launch the big project, sign the major deal, or stake the company's future on the outcome. Clear the conflict first — preferably through the Image's method, by rewriting the agreements so the next round has nothing to feed on.
The I Ching and Bazi share one root: the interplay of yin and yang and the Five Elements. Hexagram 6 puts Metal (Qian, Heaven) above Water (Kan) — and because Metal generates Water, this is a conflict inside a normally nurturing relationship. That is its most useful insight: the hardest disputes are rarely with strangers; they are with people and forces that are supposed to be on our side.《易經》與八字同出一源:皆基於陰陽與五行的相互作用。
If your Day Master is strong Metal, righteousness is in your temperament — you feel the pull to litigate every wrong, and a Song reading is a reminder that line 1 exists. If your Day Master is Water, your instinct is wiser for this hexagram: flow around the obstacle rather than charging up against it. Your Bazi chart shows which element leads your style of confrontation — and therefore which of the six exits will feel hardest for you to take.
It means Conflict (Song 訟): Heaven above Water, two forces moving in opposite ways. The reading describes a sincere but obstructed dispute and gives a clear rule — halt midway and good fortune follows; fight to the end and misfortune follows. It favors mediation ("seeing the great man") over escalation, and advises postponing major ventures until the dispute is resolved.
It is a conditional warning. Halting the dispute early, withdrawing, or accepting a fair ruling all bring good fortune in the lines; the only punishing outcome belongs to the top line, where even a won lawsuit yields honors that are "snatched away three times." Bad omen for the stubborn, manageable for the flexible.
A season of arguments about direction, not a broken bond. Drop small grievances early, refuse to score points, and take recurring disputes to a neutral third party rather than partisan friends. The top line warns against the most expensive habit in relationships: winning every argument while the warmth drains away.
They are mirror images: Hexagram 5 (Waiting) has Water above Heaven — danger ahead, strength behind — and counsels patient timing. Hexagram 6 (Conflict) has Heaven above Water — strength and danger turned against each other — and counsels de-escalation. Waiting asks when to move; Conflict asks whether to fight at all.
